We are who we are today
sculpted by many –
God, parents, teachers and friendships.
Racial riots and civil war scattered us,
all over the globe.
We landed disillusioned but hopeful.
Little did we know we were seeds sown,
to grow, bear fruit and bear witness.
And bear fruit we did.
None here have been spared –
health challenges, career disruptions, bereavement,
marriage breakdowns and betrayals…….
Yet, here we are today stronger and wiser
blessed to have this friendship,
spanning decades.
There was a time when we were little girls
and we thought and behaved like little girls.
Now look around –
We are strong women: daughters, sisters, wives, mothers,
mothers-in-law, and glamorous grandmothers.
Threads of faith, friendship and freedom
have knitted us together.
May these threads stay strong
over the next few decades!
Dedicated to my classmates as they gather in Colombo, Sri Lanka for a reunion. With much love, Sudharshana – January 7, 2025
